About the album

The mask stays on, the fringe stays long, and on his second album Orville Peck finally got the big, widescreen production his baritone always seemed to be asking for. His Sub Pop debut Pony was self-produced; Bronco moved him to Columbia and into the hands of Jay Joyce, who also mixed the record and played keyboards and guitar.

Instead of singles, Peck rolled it out in three "chapters" through early 2022, with videos for "Daytona Sand," "C'mon Baby Cry" (with cameos from Margaret Cho and Kornbread Jeté), "The Curse of the Blackened Eye" (starring Norman Reedus) and "Hexie Mountains" (with his friend Riley Keough). It's a road record at heart, full of desert highways and heartbreak, with Luke Schneider's steel guitar doing a lot of the emotional heavy lifting and nods to Gram Parsons, Emmylou Harris and 60s psychedelia along the way.

Metacritic gives it an 81, and NME called it "wholly modern and proudly queer." AllMusic described his voice as Roy Orbison meets Morrissey, which is a dinner party we'd very much like to be invited to.
