About the album

When the pandemic shut down the bars and halls of the American Southeast, The Red Clay Strays lost the thing they did best: playing live, night after night, to anyone who'd listen. So the Mobile band did the next best thing, crowdfunding a record with help from manager Cody Payne, cutting it in Huntsville and putting it out themselves in April 2022. It's a twelve-song snapshot of a bar band at full strength, recorded before anyone outside the South knew their name.

Brandon Coleman's voice is the headline, a deep, soulful croon, backed by the twin guitars of Drew Nix and Zach Rishel, Andrew Bishop on bass and John Hall on drums. "Wondering Why" is the slow-burning love song that changed everything, "Doin' Time" and "Do Me Wrong" swing and stomp, and "Stone's Throw" kicks things off with a Southern-rock swagger.

A Live AF performance of "Wondering Why" went viral in 2023, and from there came Thirty Tigers, RCA, Lollapalooza and the charts. Proof, if any were needed, that a phone video can occasionally lead somewhere better than a dance craze.
