A 180g 2LP set of Johnny Cash's 2002 album American IV: The Man Comes Around, with "Hurt," "Personal Jesus" and "The Man Comes Around."
American IV is Johnny Cash's final album to come out in his lifetime, home of his unforgettable "Hurt," and widely hailed as one of his finest records.
Johnny Cash had nothing left to prove by 2002, which may be why American IV hits so hard. Working with Rick Rubin for the fourth time, he took songs from just about everywhere and made every one of them sound like it had always been his.
His version of Nine Inch Nails' "Hurt," with its devastating video, became one of the most moving recordings of his whole career. John Frusciante helped rework Depeche Mode's "Personal Jesus" into a stomping blues, the title track is a fiery original about the end of days, and he brings quiet grace to "Bridge over Troubled Water," "In My Life" and "Danny Boy."
It's in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, a towering farewell from the Man in Black.
