About the album

After years of earnest records as J. Tillman and a stint drumming in Fleet Foxes, Josh Tillman drove down the coast to California and came back as someone else entirely. Fear Fun is the first Father John Misty album, and it's sly, self-mocking and wonderfully sincere at the same time.

Produced with Jonathan Wilson, it's full of seventies Laurel Canyon warmth. "Funtimes in Babylon" opens in a sunny haze, "Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings" stomps and grins, "Nancy from Now On" is a woozy, perfect ballad, and "I'm Writing a Novel" is a rollicking, hilarious ramble.

It made a cult hero out of a reluctant one, selling 83,000 copies in the US by 2015 and setting the stage for I Love You, Honeybear. It's a fine place to meet the man.
