Nick Drake's 1969 debut Five Leaves Left on 180g vinyl in a gatefold, with "River Man," "Way to Blue" and "Time Has Told Me."
Five Leaves Left is one of the most beautiful debuts in folk, Nick Drake's hushed voice and guitar wrapped in Robert Kirby's luminous strings.
The title came from the warning slip near the end of a pack of Rizla rolling papers, which is about as casual as anything gets on this delicate, haunting record. Nick Drake was just 20 when he started it at Sound Techniques in London with producer Joe Boyd.
Engineer John Wood remembered Drake singing and playing live along with the string section, no overdubs. You can hear the magic of that: "River Man" sways in 5/4 under Harry Robinson's strings, "Time Has Told Me" glows with Richard Thompson's guitar, "Way to Blue" and "Fruit Tree" are achingly lovely, and Robert Kirby's arrangements give the whole thing a soft autumn light.
Its reputation has grown with every passing decade. A record for quiet evenings and long thoughts.
