Nick Drake's quietly devastating 1972 album Pink Moon, just a voice and an acoustic guitar: "Pink Moon," "Place to Be," "Road" and "From the Morning."
Pink Moon is just Nick Drake, his voice and his guitar (plus one piano line on the title track), and it's become one of the most loved albums of the 1970s. Twenty-eight minutes of pure, fragile beauty.
Nick Drake's first two albums had lush arrangements and big-name session players, but for Pink Moon he went into the studio with engineer John Wood late at night and recorded it in a couple of short sessions, with nothing but his voice and guitar. The result is stark, intimate and absolutely spellbinding.
The title track (with its single overdubbed piano melody) found a whole new audience when it soundtracked a famous car commercial in 1999, "Place to Be" and "Road" are achingly lovely, and "Things Behind the Sun" and "From the Morning" show off his astonishing finger-picking. It didn't sell in its day, but it's been quietly winning hearts ever since.
