About the album

Traveller came out in May 2015, and the real fireworks arrived six months later at the CMA Awards, where Chris Stapleton and Justin Timberlake performed together, and the following week the album went to No. 1 on the Billboard 200. For a Nashville songwriter who'd spent years in the background, it was quite the introduction.

Dave Cobb produced it with Stapleton, and the sound is old-school country with Southern rock muscle, electric guitar, mandolin and acoustic sitting side by side. "Tennessee Whiskey" reached No. 1 on Hot Country Songs on the strength of that TV performance. "Nobody to Blame" won the ACM's Song of the Year, the title track took the Grammy for Best Country Solo Performance, "Fire Away" rides a classic soul-ballad groove, and "Sometimes I Cry" closes on pure blues. "Parachute" became the third single.

It's been certified quadruple platinum by the RIAA and still sounds like it was made by a band in one room, which is a big part of its pull. Our staff have stopped arguing over which side to play first, mostly because nobody wants to get up and flip it.
