Os Mutantes' 1969 second album Mutantes on bottle green vinyl, the São Paulo trio's tropicália follow-up with "Dom Quixote" and "Caminhante Noturno."
This Vinyl Lovers edition puts Mutantes on bottle green vinyl. It's the 1969 album where Rita Lee, Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias pushed their mix of Brazilian pop, psychedelia and studio mischief even further.
Most bands play it a little safer on the second album. Os Mutantes, the São Paulo trio of Rita Lee and brothers Arnaldo Baptista and Sérgio Dias, went the other way. Fresh from their 1968 debut and their part in the tropicália movement alongside Gilberto Gil and Caetano Veloso, they came back in 1969 with Mutantes, a bolder and louder record than the first. Rogério Duprat's arrangements are back, and the trio sound more confident than ever in the studio, layering strings, fuzz and found sounds with real glee.
"Dom Quixote" sets the tone with fuzz guitar and big orchestral swings, "2.001" (written with Tom Zé) crashes Brazilian country music into the space age, and "Banho de Lua (Tintarella di Luna)" gives an Italian pop tune the full Mutantes treatment. "Não Vá Se Perder Por Aí" and "Dia 36" bounce along on sunshine harmonies, and "Caminhante Noturno" closes things on a dreamy psychedelic stroll.
Decades later, Beck and Kurt Cobain were among the loud admirers who sent a new generation hunting for these records. It's sung almost entirely in Portuguese, which has never once slowed down a customer in our shop.
