About the album

Most people mark their late twenties with a cake. Kacey Musgraves marked hers with an album about Saturn's return, the astrological checkpoint said to turn up around 27 and ask some pointed questions about where your life is going. Deeper Well is her reply, a record about letting go of what no longer fits and keeping hold of what does. She cut it at Electric Lady Studios in New York, a room she says has the best mojo, while she was looking for some different energy.

She made it with Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the pair who helped shape Golden Hour, and the sound is soft and acoustic: country folk with a little 70s soft rock in the grain. "Cardinal" opens on a bright, rolling groove, the title track drifts along on fingerpicked guitar, and "Too Good to Be True" is a gentle, hopeful love song. "The Architect," written with Shane McAnally and Josh Osborne, asks very big questions in a very small, lovely space, and "Heart of the Woods" and "Jade Green" lean into the album's earthy, outdoorsy calm.

Paste called it her most sonically cohesive album, and Consequence heard it as a companion listen to Golden Hour. It also gave her the biggest first week of her career, which suggests a great many people had their own Saturn to deal with.
