About the album

They call Charley Crockett the hardest working man in country music, and the numbers back it up: 222 songs this decade, and three full albums in just over a year. This one tells the story of Billy McLane, a small-time cattle rustler who crosses the Santa Fe Ring, gets chased by bounty killers and escapes into the Crazy Mountains, where the outlaw becomes a legend.

Crockett and Jennings cut it at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles, built on guitar and pedal steel with piano, harp and keys around the edges, in the spirit of Willie Nelson, Gram Parsons and Waylon Jennings. Twenty songs run in three acts, from "Life & Times Of Billy McLane (Theme I)" through "Lonesome Dove" and "I Shot Jesse James" to "Cover My Trail Tonight." Rolling Stone called "Kentucky Too Long" a guitar-heavy lament, and "Me & Shooter" tips a hat to the producer. Characters from the first two albums converge here as well.

Crockett started out busking in New Orleans and Deep Ellum before making his way to a major label. We'd suggest clearing a whole shelf for him; he'll fill it.
