Bebel Gilberto's 2000 bossa nova classic Tanto Tempo as a 25th anniversary 2LP set cut at 45 RPM, with "So Nice (Summer Samba)" and "Samba da Benção."
This 25th anniversary 2LP set is remastered from the original tapes, cut at 45 RPM and housed in a gatefold jacket with unpublished texts and photos. Tanto Tempo has sold more than a million copies worldwide and appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
Being the daughter of João Gilberto, the man who more or less invented bossa nova, is a lot to live up to. Bebel Gilberto's answer was to bring the music into a new century. Tanto Tempo, which means "so much time," wraps classic Brazilian songcraft in soft electronic beats and late-night textures, and it became a word-of-mouth hit in cafés and living rooms around the world.
Serbian producer Suba built the sound with co-producer Béco Dranoff for Crammed Discs' Ziriguiboom imprint, and sadly died in a studio fire shortly after the sessions, reportedly while saving the newly finished album. "Samba da Benção" sets Vinicius de Moraes and Baden Powell's song over Amon Tobin's "Nova," "So Nice (Summer Samba)" gives Marcos Valle's standard a dreamy glow, and "Bananeira" and Chico Buarque's "Samba e Amor" honour the old masters. "August Day Song" and "Close Your Eyes" drift in English, and the title track borrows a little Gilberto Gil.
It went platinum across Europe, according to the independent labels' association, and has sold over 300,000 copies in the US alone. Tanto Tempo means so much time, which is roughly how long it has spent on the shop turntable.
