About the album

Michael Gira meant this to be the last word. By 1995 he'd decided the next Swans record would be a definitive final statement, so he emptied the archive: handheld cassette tapes, found sounds, loops, surveillance recordings and multitrack sessions gathered since 1981 with ten different musicians, then collaged, manipulated and EQed at Griffin Mastering in Atlanta alongside new studio performances.

The result runs from drone and musique concrète to ambient, post-rock and full-tilt industrial rock. "The Sound" and "I Was a Prisoner in Your Skull" build into huge, grinding crescendos, "Helpless Child" is a slow, hypnotic epic, and Jarboe's pieces, including "Yum-Yab Killers," weave in deeply personal family recordings. Gira also taped conversations with his father as he was losing his sight, which gave the album its title, and newer collaborators Larry Mullins and Vudi help hold it all together.

Swans disbanded after a final tour in 1997, then came back in 2010 sounding as fearless as ever. Set aside an evening, dim the lights and maybe warn the neighbours; this is a four-record commitment, and it repays every minute.
