Nine Inch Nails' 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine, the synth-driven industrial landmark: "Head Like a Hole," "Terrible Lie," "Down in It" and "Sin."
Pretty Hate Machine brought industrial music to a mainstream audience, became one of the first independent albums to go platinum, and launched Trent Reznor's legendary career.
Trent Reznor wrote, sang and played almost everything on Nine Inch Nails' debut, producing it with Flood, John Fryer and Keith LeBlanc. It fuses cold synthesizers and drum machines with pop hooks, funky grooves and raw, roaring guitars.
"Head Like a Hole" is an all-time alternative anthem, "Terrible Lie" and "Sin" are dark dance-floor fillers, and "Down in It" and "Something I Can Never Have" show the range that made Reznor a star. Its influence is still everywhere.
