The Cure: Disintegration (2LP, remastered) [FICTION / ELEKTRA / RHINO]

Why you'll love it

Disintegration is the Cure's dark, lush, sweeping peak and one of the greatest albums of the '80s. "Lovesong" reached No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the remaster spreads all 12 songs over two LPs.

About the album

Approaching 30 and feeling the weight of the band's pop success, Robert Smith went back to the shadowy, enveloping sound of Pornography and Faith, but on a far grander scale. Disintegration is all slow-building waves of keyboards, chorused guitars and Simon Gallup's huge bass lines, with Smith's most heartfelt songs floating on top.

"Plainsong" opens with a shimmer of chimes, "Pictures of You" is one of the most beautiful songs about memory ever written, "Lullaby" is creepy and catchy, and "Lovesong," written as a wedding present for Smith's wife Mary, became their biggest US hit. Long, immersive and gorgeous, this is a record to get lost in, now remastered across two LPs.
