Bauhaus's 1983 fourth album Burning from the Inside, remastered from the original tapes, with "She's in Parties" and "Kingdom's Coming."
This Beggars Banquet reissue is remastered from HD transfers of the original tapes. The album reached No. 13 on the UK Albums Chart, and "She's in Parties" climbed to No. 26 on the UK Singles Chart.
Out in July 1983, it arrived as something of a curveball. Bauhaus are rightly remembered as the band who more or less invented goth, but their fourth album takes that reputation somewhere gentler and stranger. Recorded at Rockfield Studios in Wales, it trades some of the gloom for acoustic guitars, saxophone and a surprising amount of tenderness.
With Peter Murphy ill for much of the sessions, the rest of the band took the wheel: Daniel Ash sings lead on "Slice of Life," David J takes "Who Killed Mr. Moonlight?" and the two of them share the writing load. Murphy is front and centre on "She's in Parties," a dubby, cinematic single, and the pounding "Antonin Artaud," while the title track builds into a long, hypnotic burn. Kevin Haskins handles drums and keyboards, and "Hope" closes things on a soft, spacious note.
The Quietus called it a compelling sprawl, beautiful in its fragments. David J later explained that the title came from a car catching fire from the inside, which is certainly one way to find a title, and not one we'll be trying in the shop car park.
