About the album

Here's a bit of Chili Peppers trivia that wins pub quizzes. This is the one studio album with all four founding members playing on every track. Anthony Kiedis, Flea, guitarist Hillel Slovak and drummer Jack Irons, who had started the band together in 1983, had been pulled apart by other commitments on the debut; here they were finally all in the same room for a full record, and it was the last with Slovak, who died the following year.

George Clinton had produced the previous album, Freaky Styley. New producer Michael Beinhorn pushed them to widen the palette, so the funk rock comes laced with reggae and heavy metal. "Fight Like a Brave" was the single, "Me & My Friends" picked up some radio play, and "Behind the Sun" was later issued as a single in 1992 to promote a hits collection.

The band took it on the road as the Uplift Mofo Party Tour, Flea later called it the rockingest record they ever made, and it remains the purest snapshot of the original four. The title still looks slightly alarming on a shelf, which is part of its charm.
