About the album

Every band has a chapter that sounds a little different from the rest, and this is the Chili Peppers' most adventurous one. Former Jane's Addiction guitarist Dave Navarro joined in 1993, bringing heavy riffs and psychedelic colour, and the band spent months with producer Rick Rubin at the Sound Factory in Hollywood shaping a darker, more reflective record than anything they'd made before.

"Warped" opens with swirling menace, "My Friends" is a tender acoustic ballad that went to No. 1 on both the US Modern Rock and Mainstream Rock charts, and "Aeroplane" is pure Flea bounce, with his daughter Clara and her kindergarten class singing backup. Flea takes lead vocals for the first time on "Pea," John Lurie adds harmonica to the title track, and "Transcending" and "Shallow Be Thy Game" show off Navarro's huge, swirling guitar sound.

Rolling Stone called it ferociously eclectic and imaginative, and Q named it one of the best albums of 1995. Chad Smith and Navarro reunited onstage for "My Friends" in 2021, 25 years after they last played it together, which is a long time to wait for a soundcheck.
