About the album

After the world tour for Stadium Arcadium wrapped in 2007, the Chili Peppers did something unusual for them, which was stop. Flea went off to study music theory at USC, Chad Smith toured with Chickenfoot, and the planned one-year break stretched past two. When they came back, it was with Josh Klinghoffer on guitar and Rick Rubin once again behind the desk.

The new line-up gives the band a looser, more textured feel. "The Adventures Of Rain Dance Maggie" is all bounce and Flea strut, and it went to No. 1 on the alternative chart. "Monarchy Of Roses" opens with a burst of fuzz before sliding into a disco groove, "Brendan's Death Song" builds from a quiet strum into a full-band stomp, and "Look Around" and "Did I Let You Know" let Klinghoffer's lighter touch shine. "Look Around" and "Brendan's Death Song" went out as singles too, and "Did I Let You Know" was issued in Brazil after a fan poll.

Rolling Stone readers voted it the eighth best album of 2011. It's a band of veterans sounding refreshed, which is more than most of us manage after a long holiday.
