About the album

Some singers arrive fully formed. Françoise Hardy, born and raised in Paris's 9th arrondissement, made her debut on Disques Vogue in 1962 and had a hit straight away with "Tous Les Garçons Et Les Filles," a quiet, wistful song that turned an 18-year-old into a star across France and well beyond it. A year later she was singing for Monaco at Eurovision.

This set follows her through those first five Vogue years. From 1964 she began recording in London, and the sound opens up accordingly: "Mon Amie La Rose" and "L'amitié" are gentle, string-laced classics, "Le Temps De L'amour" has the twangy cool that later turned up in film soundtracks, and "Je N'attends Plus Personne" and "Dis-lui Non" show off that low, unhurried voice. She sang in English as well, and "All Over The World" made her a name in Britain. Side D closes with "La Maison Où J'ai Grandi," "Rendez-vous D'automne" and "Voilà."

Hardy went on to work with Serge Gainsbourg and Michel Berger and kept recording for more than 50 years, but these songs are the ones that made her an icon of 1960s style. Wearing a Breton top while listening is entirely optional, though we've noticed it helps.
