About the album

Eminem announced his twelfth album with a true-crime parody asking "Who killed Slim Shady?" and then ran an obituary for his own alter ego in the Detroit Free Press. The record itself is the trial: a concept album built as a battle between Marshall Mathers and the cartoonish, chaos-loving persona who made him famous, best heard, as he told fans, in order. It arrived four years after Music to Be Murdered By, with Dr. Dre confirming it on Jimmy Kimmel Live! months ahead.

"Houdini" flips Steve Miller's "Abracadabra" and was teased with a video call to David Blaine, "Tobey" brings in Big Sean and BabyTron, and "Somebody Save Me" with Jelly Roll closes the story on a raw, personal note. Along the way, "Renaissance," "Habits" and "Fuel" with JID show the technique is as sharp as ever, and Dr. Dre, Dem Jointz, Fredwreck and Luis Resto handle the beats.

It earned his eighth nomination for the Grammy for Best Rap Album. Slim Shady has now been declared dead, given an obituary and laid to rest across four sides of vinyl; we're told he remains in excellent voice.
