About the album

Tyler, the Creator has never been one to make the same record twice, so of course his eighth album arrived as a sort of diary, stitched together by recordings of his mother, Bonita Smith, passing on the hard-won wisdom she gave him as a kid in Hawthorne. "No one knows anything about me from before I was like 17," he told the crowd at the listening party. Chromakopia fixes that.

Musically it's a glorious mess in the best way: military cadences, neo-soul melodies, jazzy detours and synth-heavy bangers that echo Flower Boy and Igor while sounding like nothing else he's done. "Noid," "Sticky" and "St. Chroma" all crashed the Hot 100, the album went straight to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (his third chart-topper) and Tyler took the whole circus on a world tour. Weird, vulnerable and wildly popular: that's Tyler in a nutshell.
