Elis Regina's 1972 album Elis, with "Águas de Março," "Atrás da Porta" and "Nada Será como Antes."
This remastered reissue comes in a gatefold jacket. Rolling Stone Brazil placed Elis among the 100 best Brazilian albums ever made, and it's packed with songs that became hits for her.
Brazil nicknamed Elis Regina the Hurricane, and by 1972 she'd long since earned it. The Porto Alegre singer broke through at the 1965 TV Excelsior festival, became the country's biggest-selling recording artist since Carmen Miranda, and helped steer Brazilian popular music past bossa nova. Elis, recorded that year at Phonogram's studio in Rio for Philips, is where she gathered the brightest songwriters of the new generation in one place.
Bossa nova veteran Roberto Menescal directed the production, and César Camargo Mariano wrote every arrangement. Milton Nascimento and Ronaldo Bastos supply "Nada Será como Antes" and "Cais," João Bosco and Aldir Blanc bring the playful "Bala com Bala," Chico Buarque and Francis Hime wrote the aching "Atrás da Porta," and Tom Jobim's "Águas de Março" tumbles along beautifully. Belchior and Fagner's "Mucuripe" and Zé Rodrix and Tavito's "Casa no Campo" round out a remarkable songbook.
Two years later she made a whole album with Jobim, but this is the record that maps her generation. It's twelve songs in about 33 minutes; humming "Casa no Campo" for the rest of the week is entirely your own business.
