Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa's 1967 album Domingo, the debut for both, with "Coração Vagabundo" and "Avarandado."
This German-pressed reissue uses the mastering from the 2019 edition. Domingo is the first album from both Caetano Veloso and Gal Costa, a quiet bossa nova record from two singers about to change Brazilian music.
Tropicália arrived in 1968 with fuzz guitars and big ideas, but a year earlier its two future stars made something much softer. Domingo pairs a young Caetano Veloso with a young Gal Costa on a set of gentle, post-bossa nova songs, most of them his. Both singers came from Bahia, and it came out on Philips in 1967.
Dori Caymmi produced the album, arranged the opening two songs and played acoustic guitar, with Francis Hime and Roberto Menescal arranging others. "Coração Vagabundo" and "Onde Eu Nasci Passa um Rio" set the hushed, intimate mood, "Avarandado" and "Um Dia" float along, and "Nenhuma Dor," written with poet Torquato Neto, shows where Veloso's writing was heading. Both singers lean on the soft voice and light touch of João Gilberto, Veloso's self-described supreme master. "Candeias" and "Zabelê" round out the second side.
AllMusic called it "a quiet, post-bossa nova effort characterized by fine singing and some very good songs." Within a couple of years both would be making far louder records; this is the Sunday before the week got busy.
