Caetano Veloso's 1968 solo debut, a founding Tropicália record, reissued by Third Man in a Stoughton tip-on sleeve.
Third Man's reissue comes in a Stoughton tip-on sleeve, the first authorized North American vinyl issue of the album. It was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame in 2001, and Pitchfork gave it 9.4.
Some albums name a scene after the fact; this one did it on the first track. Caetano Veloso's opener "Tropicália" took its title from a Hélio Oiticica art installation, and the Brazilian press promptly borrowed it for the whole movement that he, Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, Tom Zé and Os Mutantes were building in 1968.
Philips cut the record quickly to follow up "Alegria, Alegria," his hit at the TV Record Festival, and Júlio Medaglia, Damiano Cozzella and Sandino Hohagen wrote arrangements that mix psychedelia, rock, bossa nova, Indian music and Bahian sounds. Gal Costa joins him on "Clara," while Gil co-wrote "No Dia Em Que Eu Vim-Me Embora," "Soy Loco Por Ti, América" and "Eles." "Superbacana" and "Paisagem Útil" fizz with pop smarts, while "Onde Andarás" and "Clarice" show a gentler, more lyrical side. Manuel Barenbein produced it.
Brazilian Rolling Stone ranked "Tropicália" No. 21 among the greatest Brazilian songs. Fifty-odd years on it's still the most cheerful revolution we stock, and it files neatly under V.
