About the album

After two years on the road behind their debut, The Cranberries had got used to hearing themselves loud, and it shows. Drummer Fergal Lawler said the rockier, heavier turn on No Need to Argue just happened naturally; during a week off in New York they called producer Stephen Street over from London and demoed six songs at the Magic Shop. Street, who had produced their debut, took the reins again for the full album, and the band's sound grew bigger without losing its grace.

Dolores O'Riordan wrote "Zombie" in response to the 1993 Warrington bombings, and its distorted roar became the band's best-known song. "Ode to My Family" looks back on her rural upbringing, "Yeats' Grave" turns to the poet William Butler Yeats, "Daffodil Lament" builds slowly and beautifully, and "I Can't Be With You" shows the band at its most immediate.

For the cover, the band put on suits and sat on the same sofa from their debut, which was carried by hand around Dublin, out to Dalkey Island and back. It later turned up in a Supergrass video, which is more touring than most furniture ever manages.
