Why you'll love it

The Cranberries' debut went to No. 1 in the UK and Ireland, and "Linger" became their biggest US hit. "Dreams" is one of the most joyful songs of the '90s.

  • Island pressing
  • Produced by Stephen Street

About the album

Four young musicians from Limerick, with a singer named Dolores O'Riordan who could go from a whisper to a yodelling soar in a heartbeat. Working with Stephen Street (fresh from the Smiths and Blur), the Cranberries made a debut of chiming guitars, gauzy atmospheres and songs that sounded both wistful and quietly confident.

"Dreams" is pure exhilaration, "Linger" is a perfect, string-swept heartbreak song, and "Sunday," "Pretty" and "Waltzing Back" show off that dreamy, jangly sound. It took a while to catch on, but when it did it went all the way to No. 1 in the UK more than a year after it came out, something only a handful of albums have ever done.
