About the album

Dolores O'Riordan had one of those voices you know from a single syllable. Across a decade the Irish band built a run of singles around it, and Stars lines them up in sequence, so you can hear a jangly, dreamy debut harden into something bigger and louder, then soften again.

"Dreams" and "Linger" come from the Stephen Street years, "Zombie" brings the distortion, and "Ode To My Family" is as tender as they get. Bruce Fairbairn produced "Salvation" and "Free To Decide," Ben Fenner worked on "Promises" and "Animal Instinct," and Noel Hogan co-wrote much of the music with O'Riordan, right through to "Analyse" and "This Is The Day."

The collection earned the band an award in Taiwan as the best-selling international band of 2002, proof the songs travelled a long way from Limerick. Twenty songs across four sides, every one a single or a brand-new one, which is a better hit rate than our staff picks wall.
