About the album

English singer-songwriter Sam Smith's debut album In the Lonely Hour blends restrained, emotionally honest vocal performances with catchy pop song structures. Before the album arrived, Smith gained worldwide attention for their vocal on Disclosure's 2012 hit "Latch," and that exposure built real anticipation for the solo debut. In the Lonely Hour went to No. 1 on the UK Albums Chart and later found major success in the U.S., where it is certified five times platinum.

Smith called it a diary from a lonely 21-year-old, and that's exactly how it plays. "Good Thing," which they named the album's most personal song, sits alongside "Lay Me Down," "Leave Your Lover," "Like I Can" and "Not in That Way," a run of ballads built around that voice, while "Life Support" and "Little Sailor" round things off.

The original album also carried "Money on My Mind," a UK No. 1, and "I'm Not the Only One" reached No. 3 in the UK and No. 5 in the US. A later Drowning Shadows Edition added covers of Whitney Houston and Amy Winehouse. At the time Smith said they hoped to be happier soon and write about that instead. Ten years on, we're still selling the sad one.
