Olivia Rodrigo's third album, a shimmering, heartsick step up that went to No. 1 in more than 20 countries. Robert Smith of the Cure drops by.
It charted at No. 1 in over 20 countries, and "Drop Dead," "The Cure" and "Stupid Song" were hits around the world. Robert Smith of the Cure guests, and critics called it her most grown-up record yet.
Olivia Rodrigo cut her teeth on breakup bangers, but album No. 3 finds her writing sad love songs from the inside of a relationship rather than the wreckage after one. That's a whole different kind of heartache, and she nails it.
Produced, as ever, with Dan Nigro, the record wanders happily through jangle pop, dream pop, shoegaze fuzz, goth-tinged new wave and string-laden folk; Stereogum heard late-'80s college rock, Vulture called it "essentially, a rock opera." It's a big leap from the pop-punk snarl of Sour and Guts, and with Robert Smith himself along for the ride, it's safe to say Rodrigo's record collection is as good as her songwriting.
