Olivia Rodrigo was 17 when she made Sour, and if you're baffled by what happened next you've probably forgotten what it was like to be 17.
Sour won the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album, spent five weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and made Rodrigo the first artist to put three songs from a debut album at No. 1 on the Hot 100 within a year. "drivers license," "good 4 u" and "deja vu" are all here.
Olivia Rodrigo was just 17 years old when she recorded Sour and 18 when it arrived in the spring of 2021, and if you're baffled by what happened next you're either not 17 or 18 yourself or you've entirely forgotten what it was like to be 17 or 18 years old.
A mixture of spunky/punky power-pop ditties and overwrought heart-on-sleeve ballads, Rodrigo and Sour caught the prevailing zeitgeist so effortlessly because they couldn't be more Gen Z themselves. All the heartache and jealousy and anger at a world that doesn't understand your Big Emotions, the importance placed on a "drivers license," the abject hate-on for a perceived "traitor": this is what it sounds and feels like to be 17. And this is why Sour became the five-singles-deep No. 1 Billboard album and cultural phenomenon it became. It wasn't really an "overnight" kind of success story for Rodrigo, because she'd already spent years on Disney TV shows Bizaardvark and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series, but Sour definitely thrust the young singer towards a new level of pop stardom.
