About the album

Troye Sivan had a huge online following before he had an album, which raises the stakes for a debut. Blue Neighbourhood settled the matter quickly. The Perth-raised songwriter made a moody, glowing synth-pop record about growing up, first love and coming out, and told it with a directness that pop rarely managed at the time.

"Wild," "Fools" and "Talk Me Down" were tied together by a trilogy of music videos that followed a teenage romance in a small town, and the songs carry the same hushed, cinematic feel. "Youth" is the bright, bursting anthem of the set, "Bite" and "Ease" glide on slinky beats, "Heaven" is a tender standout, and "For Him." closes the main run on a sweet, low-key note before a XXYYXX remix of "Wild" sends you off. Australian rapper Allday guests on "For Him." and the production keeps everything soft-focus and intimate.

It set Sivan on his way, and he's spent the decade since building on it, from Bloom to Something to Give Each Other. Neighbourhood is spelled the proper way, too, which is more than we can say for some of the shop's handwritten signs.
