Bruno Mars: Doo-Wops & Hooligans [ELEKTRA]

Why you'll love it

Doo-Wops & Hooligans topped the charts in Canada and the U.K., went 9x platinum in the U.S. and gave Mars back-to-back No. 1 singles with "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade." Rolling Stone called it one of the year's best debuts.

About the album

Bruno Mars spent years writing hits for other people with his production crew the Smeezingtons before anybody let him step up to the microphone himself. Once they did, he wasted no time: his debut album is basically wall-to-wall singles.

Doo-Wops & Hooligans is aimed squarely at everybody (the title was picked to appeal to the girls and the guys alike) and it lands. "Just the Way You Are" and "Grenade" both went to No. 1, "The Lazy Song" and "Marry You" turned up at every wedding for a decade, and "Count on Me" is still the sweetest thing in his catalogue. Critics compared him to Michael Jackson and Jason Mraz in the same breath, which tells you pretty much everything about how broad that smile was. It still holds up.
