Ratatat's 2015 album Magnifique, all soaring guitars and big beats, with "Cream on Chrome," "Abrasive" and "Supreme."
Magnifique is Ratatat's most melodic set, guitar harmonies stacked like a choir over head-nodding beats, and the duo's first album in five years.
Five years between albums is a long time for a band that made its name on instant gratification, but Ratatat came back sounding like they'd never left. Mike Stroud and Evan Mast debuted the new songs at Coachella before Magnifique arrived in the summer of 2015.
It's all about the guitar: Stroud's lines layer up into gleaming harmonies over Mast's crisp, hip-hop-leaning beats. "Cream on Chrome" glides, "Abrasive" bounces, "Supreme" and "Pricks of Brightness" sparkle, and a cover of Springwater's 1971 single "I Will Return" adds a lovely bit of sunshine.
The collage sleeve was sketched by the duo themselves. Instrumental, catchy and endlessly replayable, it's a perfect record for a long drive or a short dance.
