Broadcast's 2000 debut The Noise Made by People, dreamy sixties-style psych pop with vintage synths, with "Echo's Answer" and "Come On Let's Go."
Trish Keenan's cool, beautiful voice over spooky analogue synths: The Noise Made by People is a cult classic of retro-futurist pop.
Imagine a sixties library-music session left running in a haunted BBC studio, and you're getting close to Broadcast. The Birmingham band produced their debut themselves after shelving earlier sessions with outside engineers, and their patience paid off beautifully.
Trish Keenan's voice is cool and gorgeous, floating over James Cargill's bass and a bank of warbly vintage keyboards. "Echo's Answer" is a hushed, eerie ballad, "Come On Let's Go" is a sweet psych-pop single, "Papercuts" and "Unchanging Window" pulse and shimmer, and "Long Was the Year" sets the mood from the first notes.
Pitchfork called it a homage to sixties psychedelic pop, and Salon heard electronica without the skittering beats. Twenty-odd years on, its influence keeps turning up everywhere.
