A 2LP set of Depeche Mode's 2005 album Playing the Angel, with "Precious," "A Pain That I'm Used To" and "Suffer Well."
Playing the Angel went to No. 1 in more than ten countries, and it's the first Depeche Mode album with songs by Dave Gahan; here as a 180g 2LP set.
"Pain and suffering in various tempos" was the motto stamped on the sleeve, and Depeche Mode delivered exactly that, gloriously. Playing the Angel is a dark, thrilling, analogue-synth record that sounds like the band rediscovering their edge.
It's also a milestone: the first Depeche Mode album to feature songs written by Dave Gahan, who contributes "Suffer Well," "I Want It All" and "Nothing's Impossible." Martin Gore's "Precious" is one of their loveliest singles, "A Pain That I'm Used To" crashes in on a wall of distorted synths, and "John the Revelator" turns an old gospel tune into a pounding electro sermon.
It went top ten in the UK and US and launched the massive Touring the Angel tour. Dark, melodic and built for the big speakers.
