About the album

Nick Cave had been bothered by the Lazarus story since his churchgoing childhood, chiefly on Lazarus's behalf, and the title song finally gives the poor man his own say.

Fresh from the garage rock of side project Grinderman, the band cut it in about five days at State of the Ark in Richmond, London, and Nick Launay mixed it at British Grove. Warren Ellis, Jim Sclavunos and Martyn P. Casey share writing credits, "Today's Lesson" and "Midnight Man" rattle along, "Jesus Of The Moon" offers a tender breather, and "More News From Nowhere" takes its title from William Morris's 1890 novel News from Nowhere. Tim Noble and Sue Webster made the artwork.

Pitchfork called it how rock musicians are supposed to age. Cave also said he wanted the album to work as a medium for Harry Houdini to speak through from beyond the grave; Houdini hasn't been in touch yet, but we're keeping the line open.
