About the album

Ten years after the first film, the Mamma Mia! crew went back to the ABBA songbook and found there was plenty left. The sequel jumps between Sophie's present day and her mother Donna's adventures in 1979, so the soundtrack gets to dig into deeper cuts alongside the hits, with Lily James leading the flashbacks as young Donna and Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Pierce Brosnan and Colin Firth back for more.

Benny Andersson produced, played piano and keyboards and mixed the record, with Björn Ulvaeus and Judy Craymer as executive producers, so the arrangements sit close to the originals. "When I Kissed the Teacher" and "Waterloo" are pure fizz, "Andante, Andante" and "The Name of the Game" give the young cast room to shine, "Fernando" brings in Cher, and "My Love, My Life" and "The Day Before You Came" close things on a tender note.

Shot on the Croatian island of Vis and elsewhere, the film premiered at the Hammersmith Apollo in London in July 2018. Two LPs of ABBA sung by movie stars is, we'd argue, the most efficient way yet devised to get an entire family singing in the car.
