Angelo Badalamenti's Grammy-winning 1990 soundtrack to David Lynch's Twin Peaks: "Twin Peaks Theme," "Laura Palmer's Theme" and "Falling" with Julee Cruise.
Angelo Badalamenti's Twin Peaks music is as iconic as the show itself, and "Twin Peaks Theme" won the Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Performance. Julee Cruise sings three songs with lyrics by David Lynch.
David Lynch and Angelo Badalamenti were already a dream team after Blue Velvet, and for Twin Peaks they cooked up a sound that's impossible to separate from the show: slow, shimmering synths, finger-snapping cool jazz and lush, aching melodies that hint at something dark under the cherry pie and coffee.
"Laura Palmer's Theme" swells into one of the most heartbreaking melodies ever written for TV, "Audrey's Dance" is pure noir swagger, and Julee Cruise's ethereal vocals on "Falling," "The Nightingale" and "Into the Night" (lyrics by Lynch) still give people chills. The album charted around the world and has been sampled endlessly since (hello, Moby). Damn fine music.
