About the album

Joanne takes its name from Lady Gaga's aunt, Joanne Stefani Germanotta, who died young, and the album is full of family and the big emotions that come with it. After acting in American Horror Story, Gaga swapped the meat dresses for a pink wide-brimmed hat and vintage denim, and made her most stripped-back record: soft rock, Americana and country in the mix, with her voice right up front.

Mark Ronson and BloodPop produced with her, and the guest list is a surprise at every turn: Kevin Parker of Tame Impala, Josh Homme, Emile Haynie and Jeff Bhasker all pitch in. "Perfect Illusion" is a breathless pop-rock rush, "Million Reasons" a big-hearted piano ballad, "A-Yo" a stomping, hand-clapping romp and "John Wayne" a rowdy rocker. The title track is the quiet centre, a lullaby for the aunt she never met.

A piano version of "Joanne" later won a Grammy for Best Pop Solo Performance. Gaga promoted the album with a run of shows in American dive bars, which is the most glamorous thing that has ever happened to most of them.
