About the album

Bradley Cooper needed a crowd for his big concert scene, so he filled the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles with around 2,000 Lady Gaga fans and filmed "Shallow" live. When the cameras stopped, Gaga stayed on and played them piano versions of her old songs, which is one way to thank the extras.

The music grew out of her work with Mark Ronson on Joanne, mixing country rock and big twangy ballads. Lukas Nelson and his band Promise of the Real play as Jackson Maine's band, and Nelson added the acoustic intro to "Shallow," written by Gaga with Ronson, Anthony Rossomando and Andrew Wyatt. "Black Eyes" and "Maybe It's Time" give Cooper his rock and roots moments, while "Always Remember Us This Way," "Is That Alright?" and "I'll Never Love Again" are Gaga at full power.

Dialogue from the film runs between the songs, so the story plays out as you listen. Keep tissues near the turntable for Side D; we keep a box by the till for the same reason.
