About the album

After leaving the Impressions, Curtis Mayfield produced his first solo album himself for his own Curtom label, moving into deeper funk and psychedelic soul with sweeping strings, punchy horns and congas, and lyrics that took on the social and political concerns of the day.

"Move On Up" is nearly nine minutes of pure, horn-driven euphoria, "(Don't Worry) If There's a Hell Below" is a thrilling, funky opener, "The Makings of You" is a tender beauty, and "We the People Who Are Darker Than Blue" is powerful and proud.
