About the album

Five years is the longest Cage the Elephant have ever gone between albums, and Neon Pill explains why. Singer Matt Shultz wrote much of it during a long mental health crisis, then came back to the songs in recovery and worked out what they meant on the other side. Once the band finally got into the studio, his brother Brad says, the record took about a month, which is quick work for a band that had waited five years.

"Rainbow" was the first song written, a love song for Matt's wife Eva about being lifted up. "Out Loud" and "Over Your Shoulder" remember the brothers' father, a musician who died in 2020, and "Float Into the Sky" comes from a lonelier stretch. The title track and "Metaverse" carry the band's restless, genre-fluid rock, while "Hifi (True Light)" opens the album on a bright, open-hearted note.

Brad said their influences this time were less about what's trending and more about what was inside them. Matt calls himself a living miracle, and on the strength of these twelve songs we're not going to argue.
