Cage the Elephant's Grammy-nominated 2013 album: "Cigarette Daydreams," "Come a Little Closer" and "Take It or Leave It."
Melophobia went platinum and was nominated for the Grammy for Best Alternative Music Album. "Cigarette Daydreams" has become one of the most beloved alt-rock songs of its decade.
"Melophobia" means fear of music, and Cage the Elephant didn't mean it literally. What they were afraid of, they said, was making music to project an image, so for their third album the Kentucky band shut themselves off from as much recorded music as they could and tried to write songs that sounded only like themselves. It worked.
Recorded in Nashville with producer Jay Joyce, Melophobia is looser, weirder and more melodic than anything they'd done before: the swaggering "Come a Little Closer," the jittery "Take It or Leave It," and the closing "Cigarette Daydreams," a wistful little ballad that slowly became one of their biggest songs. It went platinum, got a Grammy nod, and set them up for the wins that followed.
