Cage the Elephant's 2015 album Tell Me I'm Pretty, produced by Dan Auerbach, with "Mess Around," "Trouble" and "Cold Cold Cold."
This pressing comes on 180g vinyl in a gatefold jacket with a lyrics and credits insert. The album won the Grammy for Best Rock Album, and "Trouble" went to No. 1 on Billboard's Alternative Songs chart.
Some producers polish a band; Dan Auerbach of The Black Keys preferred to keep Cage the Elephant slightly off balance. He brought the Kentucky band to his Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville in the spring of 2015, pushed for scratch vocals and first takes, and kept everyone second-guessing in the best possible way. Matt Shultz said the aim was to be more transparent and honest about what each song made them feel.
The result leans into a vintage 60s and 70s sound, all garage riffs and psychedelic shimmer, with David Bowie's restlessness as a guiding light. "Mess Around" arrived first with a video built from Georges Méliès's 1902 film A Trip to the Moon, "Trouble" got a Wild West video of its own, and "Too Late To Say Goodbye" shows off Brad Shultz's pedal work. "Cry Baby" opens with a jolt, "Sweetie Little Jean" swings, and "Cold Cold Cold" became the next video. Auerbach also chips in guitar, keys and backing vocals.
It reached No. 26 on the Billboard 200 and No. 3 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and the band toured it across North America with Portugal. The Man. Méliès made his moon film in 1902, which makes him comfortably the oldest director ever to land a Cage the Elephant video.
