Britney Spears' 2008 sixth album Circus, with "Womanizer," "Circus," "If U Seek Amy" and "Radar."
Circus debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with 505,000 copies in its first week and has gone triple platinum. "Womanizer" jumped from No. 96 to No. 1 on the Hot 100, then the biggest leap in the chart's history.
After the dark, club-ready Blackout, Britney Spears wanted her next record to be "a little bit lighter." Circus came out on December 2, 2008, her 27th birthday, and was greeted as the comeback it was meant to be. Larry Rudolph and Teresa LaBarbera Whites steered it as executive producers.
She went back to old friends Max Martin, Bloodshy & Avant, Guy Sigsworth and Danja, and added new names including Dr. Luke and Benny Blanco. The result is glossy pop and dance from start to finish. "Womanizer" is all sirens and attitude, the title track struts into the ring (and reached No. 3 on the Hot 100), and "If U Seek Amy" and "Radar" kept the singles coming. "Out from Under" and "Unusual You" show a softer side, while "Kill the Lights" and "Shattered Glass" keep the dancefloor busy.
It gave her two US top ten singles from one album for the first time since her debut, and she took the songs on the road with The Circus Starring Britney Spears tour in 2009. Ringmaster's whip optional, though we've found it helps with the dusting.
