About the album

Three record companies turned down a teenager from Kentwood, Louisiana, on the grounds that nobody wanted another solo pop singer. Jive Records took the call two weeks later, sent Britney Spears to work with producer Eric Foster White, and then put her on a plane to Cheiron Studios in Stockholm to meet Max Martin and Rami Yacoub.

In Stockholm Martin played her a song he had written for TLC, who had passed on it. Spears was nervous on the first day, came back relaxed on the second and nailed it, and the title track became one of the best-selling physical singles of all time. Around it sit the bubblegum glide of "(You Drive Me) Crazy," the gentle ballad "Sometimes," the big-hearted "Born to Make You Happy" and Foster White's "From the Bottom of My Broken Heart," plus a cover of Sonny & Cher's "The Beat Goes On" with production help from All Seeing I.

The record earned her a Best New Artist nomination at the Grammys, launched her first headlining tour, and in 2020 Rolling Stone named the title track the greatest debut single of all time. Twenty-odd years on, those three opening piano notes still make the whole shop turn round, which is more than our doorbell manages.
