Britney Spears' 2001 third album Britney, her grittier R&B turn: "I'm A Slave 4 U," "Overprotected" and "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman."
This Jive / Legacy LP brings back Britney's third album in its original running order. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 with about 746,000 copies in its first week, went 4x platinum in the US and sold more than 10 million worldwide.
By 2001 Britney Spears was the biggest pop star on the planet, and she was ready to grow up a little, in public, on her own terms. Her third album traded some of the bubblegum for a grittier, R&B-influenced sound, and she wasn't shy about who she brought in to help.
The Neptunes produced "I'm A Slave 4 U" and "Boys," all slinky beats and breathy cool, Rodney Jerkins handled her cover of Joan Jett's "I Love Rock 'N' Roll," and Max Martin returned for "Overprotected," which earned a Grammy nomination. "I'm Not A Girl, Not Yet A Woman," written for her film debut Crossroads, went to No. 2 in the UK, and BT and Justin Timberlake also show up in the credits. "Anticipating" and "Cinderella" keep the dance floor busy in between.
The album was nominated for the Grammy for Best Pop Vocal Album and went to No. 1 in Canada, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. Twenty-odd years on, "I'm A Slave 4 U" still sounds like the future, which is more than we can say for our shop computer.
