Björk's 2015 album Vulnicura as a 2LP set, made with Arca and The Haxan Cloak, with "Stonemilker," "Lionsong" and "Black Lake."
This 2LP set comes in a gatefold with printed inner sleeves carrying extra artwork, lyrics, credits and Björk's handwritten thanks. Vulnicura peaked at No. 20 on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy nomination for Best Alternative Music Album.
Björk has written about volcanoes, DNA and the solar system, so it took a certain courage to make an album about something as ordinary and as devastating as a breakup. Vulnicura charts the months before and after her split from the artist Matthew Barney and the slow work of healing, and it was due out in March 2015 until an internet leak moved it up by two months.
She produced it with the Venezuelan producer Arca, whose mixtape had caught her ear, and The Haxan Cloak, who joins on "Family." Lush string arrangements wrap around skittering beats throughout. "Stonemilker" opens with longing, "Lionsong" and "History of Touches" pick through the aftermath, and the ten-minute "Black Lake" is the emotional centre. "Family" and "Notget" turn towards repair, "Atom Dance" brings in Antony Hegarty, and "Quicksand" closes on a note of resilience. The project was worked on in Reykjavík, London, New York and the Caribbean.
Many critics called it her most honest work and her best in a decade, and it spawned an all-strings companion, Vulnicura Strings, played partly on an instrument designed by Leonardo da Vinci. Few heartbreak records end up with a Renaissance inventor on the sequel.
