Bahian duo Antonio Carlos & Jocafi with Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, the 26th Jazz Is Dead album, on green vinyl.
This edition comes on green vinyl. Antonio Carlos & Jocafi have carried Brazilian soul for more than five decades, and here they cut fresh songs in Los Angeles with Jazz Is Dead's Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad.
Plenty of great records start with a handshake. This one started with a friendly introduction from Beto Barreto of BaianaSystem, and by the duo's own account the first meeting felt like family. Adrian Younge and Ali Shaheed Muhammad, of A Tribe Called Quest fame, then invited Antonio Carlos & Jocafi to Los Angeles to make a record.
They arrived with a few ideas and wrote new songs on the spot, the improvised, intuitive way every Jazz Is Dead session works. Younge produced, recorded and mixed it, and shares writing credit with the duo. "Rala-Bucho" and "Menina do Tororó" bring Bahian folk rhythms into Younge's warm analog sound, "Bacaxá" and "Quixodó" groove hard, and "Un Ambraço no Adrian" is a musical hug for the host. "Canarin da Alemanha," "Tá Com Medo Por Quê" and "Nunca Mais" fill out a set that runs from sunny folk to deep soul, and "Loca Pasión" closes things on a romantic note.
The duo credit Younge with studying Brazilian rhythms deeply enough to feel them, and it shows. It's a line drawn straight from Salvador's Mercado Modelo to a studio in LA, and it's a lot shorter than the flight.
