Why you'll love it

Crisis turns 20 on red and white splatter vinyl, with updated artwork for the anniversary. It debuted at No. 1 in Canada, sold over 20,000 copies in its first week and went platinum here, and Kerrang! later named it one of the 50 greatest albums of the 21st century.

About the album

By 2006 Alexisonfire had already turned a St. Catharines band into one of the biggest names in Canadian post-hardcore, and Crisis is the album where they sounded like it. Jordan Hastings had taken over the drum stool the year before, and the band spent February and March of 2006 at Metalworks in Mississauga and Silo Recording, co-producing with Julius Butty. The result is bigger and more tuneful than anything before it, with Dallas Green's clean melodies and George Pettit's screams trading blows over riffs that never let up.

The singles did the heavy lifting: "Boiled Frogs," "This Could Be Anywhere In The World" (later certified gold in Canada on its own), "Rough Hands" and the opener "Drunks, Lovers, Sinners And Saints." Gared O'Donnell of Planes Mistaken For Stars turns up on "You Burn First," and the cover, a snowed-in scene from the Great Lakes blizzard of 1977, ties into the lyrics of the title track.

Its influence is all over the next wave of heavy records, from Silverstein to Cancer Bats to Four Year Strong, and two decades later it still sounds like a band at full tilt, which is exactly why it belongs on every Canadian punk shelf.
